What Does A Missing Tooth Say About You?

San Mateo Dental Implants For Missing Teeth When you meet someone in San Francisco who is missing a front tooth, what does that say to you? Do you wonder if they were in an accident? Do you automatically start making assumptions about their income, level of education and overall physical health?

Though it is extremely unfair, we are often judged (and misjudged) by our appearance. Even if a person is impeccably dressed and groomed, a missing front tooth detracts from the overall pleasing impression.

Here is a personal story from a woman who lost a tooth:

I lost my job and along with it my dental insurance, then a month later, one of my front teeth. It has been very hard to find work…. and I know the missing tooth has cost me several jobs.”

A missing tooth can be a big deal.

Dental implants not only restore oral health, they restore self-confidence. Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. Studies have shown that after more than 20 years, the vast majority of dental implants placed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons continue to function at peak performance. If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Dental implants are one of the procedures we routinely perform at Kenneth Hovden DDS to help our San Francisco clients regain the beautiful smile they once had. Not all cosmetic dental procedures are as extreme as teeth implants. There are many minimally-invasive remedies for unattractive smiles.

Porcelain veneers instantly provide a perfect, gleaming tooth surface for San Francisco clients with broken or discolored teeth. Tooth whitening is a quick and affordable dentistry procedure in San Mateo that achieves dramatic results without requiring the removal of any tooth structure. Call Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-755-6000 for more information about smile design and restorative dentistry.

A New Reason To Eat More Fish In San Francisco

Your San Francisco Dentist Offers Dental Health And Diet Ideas Hello San Francisco cosmetic dental blog visitors, welcome to the Kenneth Hovden DDS blog. I am Dr. Kenneth Hovden.

I came across an interesting dental article on the Web MD Health News site the other day. The article is entitled ‘Fatty Fish, Nuts May Prevent Gum Disease.’ Author Jennifer Warner explains that a recent study links diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) with a lower risk of periodontitis.

Gum disease is a common dental issue for many San Francisco area folks. When gum tissue pulls away from a tooth, it forms a pocket. (You know what they say about Nature abhorring a vacuum.) This pocket is a warm, moist place for bacteria to flourish. If periodontitis goes untreated, the tooth and jaw bone are at risk. During dental examinations, I carefully measure gumline pockets and examine all teeth for gum disease.

“Researchers found that people whose diets were rich in PUFAs were as much as 30 percent less likely to have gum disease than those who ate little or none of this type of fat.”

Foods high in PUFAs include salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, sardines, herring. Oils high in PUFAs include safflower oil, soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and margarines made with the previously mentioned oils. Almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds are high PUFA nuts/seeds.

I don’t know many families in the Daly City area that regularly eat mackerel and herring. Maybe some of us could benefit from becoming more adventurous when it comes to seafood.

The possible prevention of gum disease is not the only reason to eat high PUFA foods. These foods pack a nutritional punch and have myriad health benefits. The next time you are stocking up at Costco, you may want to add some salmon and walnuts to your list.

It is important to understand that diet alone will not treat or prevent gum disease, however it may be an additional tool for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

If you have not been to your San Francisco dentist in a while, I urge you to schedule an examination and cleaning today. We are currently taking new San Francisco area cosmetic and restorative dentistry clients at Kenneth Hovden DDS.

If you are interested in teeth whitening, smile makeovers, tooth-colored fillings or invisible braces, call us today to schedule an appointment.

Energy Drink Warning For San Mateo County

Your South San Francisco Cosmetic Dentist Warns Against Energy Drinks Hello. I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden.

Welcome to my South San Francisco cosmetic dental blog. Today’s topic is energy drinks and the damage they can cause to your teeth. I am seeing more and more South San Francisco teens and adults with tooth enamel erosion caused by frequent consumption of sport drinks.

Most of these South San Francisco dentistry patients take good care of their teeth, brush and flush, and come into Kenneth Hovden DDS for a twice-yearly exam and deep cleaning. But guess what? If you drink energy drinks regularly, your enamel can erode even if you practice immaculate oral hygiene.

Energy drinks like Red Bull, Rock Star, and Monster are a cocktail of powerful acids and other enamel-eroding substances. Most of them contain citric acid, fruit juices, loads of sugar, and a potent chemical that gives them their bright fluorescent color.

Perhaps, like myself, you have often noticed young people walking out of South San Francisco convenience stores swigging 32-ounce energy drinks. I am concerned that South San Francisco teens do not understand the serious dental consequences of frequent acid baths.

The following is from ABC Sports:

“Sports drinks are increasingly damaging the teeth of professional and recreational athletes, one of Australia’s top sports dentists has warned. Dr. Brett Dorney says he has witnessed a huge increase in dental erosion since the Sidney Olympics, when he was the event’s deputy director of dental services.”

Here is an excerpt from a recent CNN Story:

“Researchers at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry found the energy drinks and sports drinks eroded the enamel more than soda and fruit juices.”

I need to add the caveat that soda and fruit juices also contain acids that can damage teeth.

If your teeth have enamel erosion, whatever the cause, we can restore your smile with advanced cosmetic dentistry. Crowns, porcelain veneers, inlays and onlays can correct both structural and cosmetic problems.

Our phone number is 650-755-6000. If you are interested in re-designing your smile, come in for an exam and consultation. With cutting-edge cosmetic and restorative dentistry, we can repair acid-damaged teeth and dramatically increase your face value.

Multi-Procedure Dental Visits in Daly City

Multi-Procedure Dental Visits in Daly City If you are planning extensive cosmetic dental work, you may be wondering whether to do it all at once or one procedure at a time over an extended period. Here are some factors to consider:

Cost
In the long run, It is less expensive to do it all at once. At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, we are able to complete several restorative dentistry procedures in one visit. We know that complete smile transformations are a significant investment for most South San Francisco residents. We would be happy to discuss affordable dentistry financing options. Call us at 650-755-6000 to schedule a no-pressure consultation.

Time
With the latest materials and cosmetic dental techniques, healing times are shorter than ever before. However, some procedures such as bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, root canals, and dental implants often require a short healing period.

It is easier physically and psychologically to have the fewest possible visits to your Daly City dentist. You should also consider how your dental visits and necessary healing periods will impact your employment and family life. You will have less down time if you receive several procedures at once.

Aesthetic Results
While we routinely achieve great outcomes when doing a smile makeover in steps, porcelain restorations are best fabricated in the same “batch” for the most precise color matching.

Tooth Ache Pain The Size of South San Francisco

South San Francisco Root Canals Can Alleviate Tooth Pain Patients often come into our Daly City cosmetic dental practice and complain about ‘a toothache the size of South San Francisco’. I understand this kind of pain, and realize that when you describe it like that, it really hurts. I can help.

Toothache pain can be unbearable for anyone. At the very least, toothache pain can cause you to avoid eating certain foods, certain temperatures, and even talking. Severe toothache pain can be downright debilitating, forcing patients to go to extreme measures to alleviate the pain.

Around South San Francisco, the most common causes of a toothache include tooth infection, decay, injury, and loss of a tooth. Tooth pain can also occur after a tooth has been extracted, or after a restorative dentistry oral surgery involving anything from a tooth or your jawbone.

I can help you better understand the source of your tooth pain, and in most cases can provide a nearly immediate remedy. In severe cases, we are equipped to council you on a variety of resolutions. Your pain may be fixed by root canals or just a simple filling.

Of course, the best way to avoid toothache pain is to visit your Daly City dentist often, and to care properly for your teeth including the regular regimen of brushing and flossing.

If you are experiencing tooth pain, and just can’t stand it any more, please give me a call; I am standing by to help.

Cavity Fighting Chewing Gum For Our San Mateo County Patients?

Cosmetic Dentistry In San Mateo County I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden DDS of Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. My San Mateo County dentistry clients often ask me if chewing xylitol gum is an effective substitute for tooth brushing and regular cosmetic dental exams.

Before I answer that question, let me tell you a little bit about xylitol:

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that was first discovered in birch tree bark but is also found in many fruits and vegetables. Unlike most other sweeteners (natural or synthetic), xylitol is actually good for your teeth. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that xylitol prevents the growth of the bacteria that initiates decay. It also reduces plaque and strengthens tooth enamel.

Xylitol has other benefits, as well. Because it is low on the glycemic index, many of my San Mateo County diabetic patients enjoy it as a healthy alternative to sugar. If my cosmetic dentistry patients complain about frequent dry mouth, I recommend Xylitol gum or mints to stimulate saliva production without promoting tooth decay.

Now, back to the golden question. Is xylitol gum just as effective as brushing your teeth and seeing your South San Francisco family dentist regularly? Absolutely not! If you cannot brush your teeth after a meal, chewing xylitol gum for five or ten minutes is probably a good idea. However, you should still brush your teeth thoroughly (with a soft brush) after meals and get twice-yearly exams and dental deep cleanings at your cosmetic and restorative dentistry clinic.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, our goal is to keep your smile healthy and beautiful for life by preventing dental problems before they start. If you postpone San Mateo County dental visits until you feel pain, you risk losing teeth and most certainly will require more extensive treatment than if the problem was caught earlier. Is it time for a dental exam? Call us at 650-755-6000 to book an appointment. Our professional team is waiting to take care of all your dental needs.

Kenneth Hovden DDS on Jaw Bone Deterioration

Dental Implants San Mateo County To remain dense, your jaw bone requires the continual stimulation and pressure of chewing, biting and talking. Each of your teeth has a root structure attached to the surrounding bone material. As each tooth absorbs the forces of everyday mouth function, it stimulates the bone to which the root is attached.

When a tooth is extracted, the jaw bone that previously surrounded the root structure begins to recede. Though tooth extraction is often the only possible treatment for our San Mateo County patients with tooth damage beyond repair, every effort should be made to preserve the root structure.

Fortunately, dental implants provide a new root which keeps the surrounding bone healthy and strong. A dental implant consists of a titanium post which is placed in the jaw bone. It replaces the original root and eventually integrates into the surrounding bone. After the implant has been placed and the surrounding bone has healed and meshed with the implant, a post is inserted into the implant. The new artificial teeth, or dental crowns, are then attached to the post. Implant restoration is a safe and effective treatment for tooth loss.

To learn more about dental implants, call Kenneth Hovden at 650-755-6000. The friendly professionals at Kenneth Hovden DDS provide world-class cosmetic dental treatment for patients in San Mateo County and the surrounding areas.

Cosmetic Dentistry San Mateo County At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we are all about success. Dr. Kenneth Hovden’s experience, ability, and commitment to dental excellence result in successful outcomes daily for our dentistry clients. Each team member at Kenneth Hovden DDS shares Dr. Hovden’s passion for success.

For many San Mateo County dental patients, success is a routine check-up that reveals healthy teeth and no cavities. For our cosmetic dental clients, success is a stunning smile makeover using veneers, teeth whitening and tooth-colored fillings. For our San Mateo County patients with a missing tooth, dental implants are used to successfully restore their smile. It is exciting to see implant recipients smile for the first time after receiving their new tooth implant.

We also enjoy completing successful tooth-straightening procedures for youth and adults. Though these transformations take longer than one-visit smile re-designs, the results are no less incredible. In fact, our San Mateo County Invisalign patients probably appreciate their straight teeth and beautiful smile more than any of our other patients.

Success sometimes means removing tetracycline stains for a San Mateo County teeth whitening patient who has been hiding his/her smile for years. Sometimes, success is as simple as helping a nervous patient feel relaxed and comfortable during their visit to our San Mateo County family dental office.

What do you desire for your smile? At Kenneth Hovden DDS, our success depends on your complete smile satisfaction.
